I have been looking all over for Bandhi Chhor Diwas activities for kids. There are few to be found, and many still use only the name Diwali. I really wanted more activities to expose her to a recently appointed name for Sikh Diwali: Bandhi Chhor Diwas.
Bandhi Chhor Diwas celebrates the return of Sri Guru Hargobind Ji from wrongful imprisonment by the then Mughal Emperor Jahangir. His return to the city of Amritsar coincided with the festival of Diwali. Since then, Sikhs have been celebrating during the festival of Diwali, and for ease, Sikhs referred to the celebration of Guru Hargobind Ji's return, as Diwali. Recently, there has been a movement to give this celebration it's own identity - Bandhi Chhor Diwas (Prisoner Release Day). It is still a celebration of the win of good over evil, and it is still celebrated with Sikh prayers, lights (diyas), and festivities. But now, Sikhs, have their own name for the festival.
